Back to Interview List

MM: Firstly thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions!
Nalle Österman: No problem, mate, no problem!

MM: For those unfamiliar with Chaosbreed, can you introduce the band and tell us which bands they might have seen you guy’s play in?
NO: Chaosbreed is: Esa Holopainen – guitars (Amorphis). Marko Tarvonen – guitars (Moonsorrow), Oppu Laine – bass (ex-Amorphis, Mannhai), Taneli Jarva – vocals (ex-Sentenced, The Black League) and me, Nalle Österman – drums (ex-Gandalf)
MM: How would you describe Chaosbreed and how and when exactly did you guys form?
NO: We formed the band spring 2003 because we felt a sudden need to churn out some good ole’ death metal. Back then we named as some of our influences the following: ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, CARNAGE, GRAVE, UNLEASHED, AUTOPSY, REPULSION, CARCASS, SLAYER and MORBID ANGEL. These names are still valid.

MM: Your 5-Track demo, “Unleashed Carnage” was recently released by Crash Music, and has a very raw feeling to it. Was this something you planned?
NO: Nope. We went to a shit-hole for a studio and “Unleashed Carnage” is the result we got.

MM: Besides Crash Music, can you give us some details on other labels that had showed some interest?
NO: Well, after we put three songs from “Unleashed Carnage” to be downloaded for free from our website we got some serious interest from several labels. As Rising Realm Records wanted to release “Unleashed Carnage” (that was later licensed to Crash Music Inc.) to a fair deal, we went with them. After a while we started to gain offers for full-length albums, so we signed with Century Media, who offered us the best deal.

MM: What has the reaction been like so far to the band and the demo?
NO: Very good, almost too good in fact! Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far, you rule!

MM: Where would you say you draw your main influences as a band?
NO: Check out question number three. We have been accused of “stealing” the Stockholm sound and what can we say… we are as guilty as charged!

MM: Your all involved in other projects, would you say Chaosbreed is a sort of side project or something on the same par as your other bands?
NO: It works fairly well alongside all other bands and projects we have. It’s definitely more than a project as there is a genuinely band-feeling.

MM: Your all pretty well know guys, and there is going to be a lot of attention focused on Chaosbreed just for who you are and what bands your in at the moment, how do you feel about this?
NO: We can’t change our past either so why not acknowledge where we are coming from and what we have done. Maybe we will create more interest towards this band that way. And don’t all bands want to gain attention? We chose to acknowledge our past and merits as opposed to burn a few churches. More boring this way, but we want the music to do the talking as opposed to talk bullshit or to rut in a prison to gain more exposure.

MM: What things are you hoping to achieve over the next year? Debut album/Tours/Festivals etc?
NO: Our debut album “Brutal” is released April 26. on Century Media. Check it out: ten songs of brutal death metal produced with an album quality sound as opposed to “Unleashed Carnage”, which at the end of the day is a demo. After that we plan to play as many gigs and festivals as we possibly can. Hopefully we can come to the UK soon as well!

MM: Any last comments for our readers? Thanks again and we hope things go well for you guys.
NO: Stay sick, stay brutal! Thanks for the interview and the support, death metal lives again!
