In January 2006 songwriter/bass player Paul Logue of Cry Havoc and United States
born and bred vocalist Michael Eden decided to form a rock solid partnership
cemented in Metal. The two were 100% positive that the music created between
them would break down walls worldwide and have people asking questions. The two
new friends spoke for hundreds of hours being creative before making a battle
plan. With the finalized line-up of Michael Eden, Paul Logue, Pete Newdeck, Thorsten Koehne and Ferdy Doernberg, EDEN’S CURSE will take no prisoners in this game of Rock’N’Roll. They will curse
you if you curse them. Game on!
Metal Mayhem: Thanks for answering a few of our questions. How are things at the moment?
Paul Logue: "No problem Chris, thanks for taking the time to pull some together! Things are great right now. If I fell into Glasgow's famous River Clyde I reckon I'd come out with two salmon in each pocket!!"
Michael Eden: "Things are super busy for me as we are doing press. We are so busy it's stupid. If I got any more busy I would be doing my own house cleaning rather than paying the maid $200 a week. "
MM: Can you please introduce yourself and the rest of the band for those unfamiliar?
PL: "I am Paul Logue, bassist and principle song writer for Eden's Curse. The band line up is completed by Michael Eden; the only guy that the devil is scared of, from the USA on lead vocals, Thorsten Koehne; The Lord of the Strings, from Germany on guitar, Ferdy Doernberg; "Have keys will travel", also from Germany on keyboards, and last but by no means least, Pete Newdeck' my best friends hot drum, from England on Drums and groupie passes."
ME: "I'm Michael Eden the singer and lead dog with the name on the cover. My boys just love that and they insisted on it. I'm lucky to have such a killer looking logo as everyone seems to mention..... We had to escape those who didn't see the bigger picture by finding labels and supporters who deserved us! No actually, we are super busy doing press. I'm just hoping the hard work pays off."
MM: You are all accomplished musicians in the Metal scene, but can you tell us how Eden's Curse formed, and how you all got together?
PL: "I guess you could say, through the wonders of the internet. I had grown weary of the lack of interest here in Scotland and decided to turn to message boards to see if I could unearth a gem or two. As I sit back in my Penthouse sipping pina-colada's and wondering which one of the seven naked Playmates on my bed is first, I would say the four diamonds I found changed my life for the better!"
ME: "Well, Paul sent me an email. That email was one that I actually answered. Well....we put things together on paper and they looked great. Of course we paid for it ourselves as well. Are we insane? Don't real musicians get paid?"
MM: There are probably people who will recognise your names from other bands, but in regards to Eden's Curse; as it's a very multi-national band (UK, USA, Germany), is this somewhat of a side project or is it going one of your main focus' now?
PL: "First of all, my other band is no longer a going concern so this is 100% the main focus. A project it is most certainly not! All the guys in the band are in because of talent, first and foremost, where they hail from is not a problem in today's world and we have already started work on album number two."
ME: "Personally, I hate side projects and projects all together. Cash grabbing whores who project their music onto others for the sake of paying the bills make me wanna puke! Try playing some music with your main band that somebody might wanna buy with their hard earned money. We are very fortunate to have a few loyal people who support us! Again........The Project word is not one I like."
MM: Due to the geographic spread of the bands members, how do practices and band meetings go, etc?
PL: "Well, I jump in the private jet and pick up everyone on the way to a secret location.....!! Seriously though, we don't really practice yet as we haven't actually played live up 'til now, but as far as band meetings go we usually construct operations from 'Curse Control via email'. It's all good and so far it has run like clockwork."
ME: "The location Paul is speaking about there was the hidden driveway below the Dennis Ward ranch. Dennis owns some rather huge property just outside Orlando, Florida. We all practice our best rap acts and dance in the streets with a few of the other thugs who can kick it hard core. Word up!! The utter tightness of Newdeck dancing the two step with the Florida whores just smokes me down all together!!"
MM: Who would you say are the main people behind the band, who handle the day-to-day running say?
PL: "Michael and I run the business side, and we talk almost daily thanks to the wonders of VOIP programs like Skype."
ME: "I'm Bond. James Bond! And I'm behind every door. Open door number seven and you'll learn that Sir. Logue and myself are an unstoppable force. Lets see the chimps try and swing on our tree! They best remember I got a damn good aim as I'm perched high in the tree tops above."
MM: Coming onto your debut "Eden's Curse" which has not long been released, how would you say it has been received so far in regards to reviews and feedback? Have you seen many reviews of the album?
PL: "We've seen lots of reviews and so far they have been absolutely outstanding. We have been genuinely blown away by the response."
ME: "Fantastic!! And let it continue to rain good news on my parade daily. More, more, more.....I just crave a good cookie from that old jar full of the stale ones!!"
MM: Who are the main writers in the band? And what subjects do you explore on the album?
PL: "I write 98% of the music on my own and start all the lyrics, which Michael and I then work through. Carsten Schulz (Evidence One) contributed lyrically and Thorsten wrote one track, whilst Pete and Ferdy wrote a little here and there. Lyrical subjects all start in my head and are usually experiences that I am going through at the time or have recently been through. Other subjects can inspire me too. The album features songs about betrayal, pressure, temptation, death, love, starting again somewhere new, positive feelings for our band and of course a slice of history with the tale of Robert The Bruce."
ME: "I've got a few surprises in store for album number two and three!! Lets just say things are changing and well........I like it !!"
MM: For those that have yet to hear Eden's Curse, what can they expect? How would you sell the album to someone who has never heard you?
PL: "If you like big guitars, with lots of solos, big pounding drums, slamming bass and subtle keys..... All topped off with a killer modern production by Dennis Ward and at the forefront a voice like nothing else out there at the moment - then Eden's Curse might be what you are looking for!"
ME: "If people are sick of the same old bullshit coming out month after month then I say this......Please open your wallets and girls open your legs. No, Ahem... What I meant to say....em..., We are truly blessed to have anyone ask about us at all. If they dig Rock Music the way it was meant to be played..........Loud, rude and in your fucking face... then we are the band of choice they might wanna check out. No cute spandex gimmick's here."
MM: Eden's Curse is a band that doesn't really follow any modern trends. Plenty of 'old school'/Melodic Hard Rock influences, yet, there is a definite contemporary edge to the band. Do you think that this is a fair assumption? What did you set out to achieve on the album?
PL: "I think you hit the nail on the head Chris. Dennis brings in the modern production techniques, but in terms of songs; I always write from the heart and it lies firmly in an era when a riff was a god damn, motherfucking, shit stirring, head turning, head bopping, wham bam slam shazam RIFF!!! The older players were always the guys that could really play you know ? Guys like George Lynch - he knew what a real riff was!"
"You know I picked up a copy of Kerrang! yesterday and dear God almighty. If it wasn't for the fact that our CD had been reviewed in it ... I would have taken the thing out to my back garden, doused it in petrol and watched in delight as the black smoke rose. Modern trends are of no interest to me whatsoever."
ME: "For the people by the people!! No hippie, tree loving rude dogs in my neighborhood. My boys are ready at any moment to kick it!! We got soul, steam, piss and plenty of brass balls to deliver such ditties upon doorsteps every where!!"
MM: The debut has had many plays here since we received it a good few weeks ago, and our personal favourite tracks are "Fly Away", closely followed by "Eyes of the World". What are your favourite tracks and are there any you are particularly proud of?
PL: "First of all, I'm proud of every single one of them! They all mean something different to me. "Judgement Day" is particularly special as it was the first song that I played Mike; it started this whole ball rolling. Being a passionate Scot I also have to pay homage to "The Bruce" and "Fallen King" which I love because of the subject matter."
ME: "Well.....I love it all. Otherwise I'd be the singer of the Village People. Gotta love those fancy 70's clothes! I mean fucking hell..............Have ya ever heard of a metal guy playing disco? Fuck me running! Lets hope that never happens. Wait a minute.....Maybe it already did? Or is it just a Journey that was never finished? James Brown had too much soul. Ya...........I feel good!"
MM: How about any singles from the album. What tracks would you pick?
PL: "Judgement Day", "Eyes of The World" and "The Voice Inside" with an over blown video to accompany it!"
ME: None! There is no station that supports Metal in the USA, so why do it? So how about this......I send in the bootleggers and they film the live shows! Then the tapes appear on Ebay the next day!! Hey......Ya gotta support promotion no matter what form it comes in! The guys who bitch the most are the ones who might truly suck in a live concert setting? Not sure.....Name a band and I'll check the inventory from the warehouse shelf."
MM: How about tours/gigs? Are there any forthcoming or planned shows?
PL: "We have nothing concrete but there has been a little discussion. It will happen, so watch this space, or more importantly watch our website www.EdensCurse.com"
ME: "Please call the AFM Records front office and demand Eden's Curse on tour near you! If enough people want us I'm sure we will bring our horror to your town soon!! Stay tuned.....This ones a work in progress believe me!!"
MM: There are only a few months now until the end of 2007, but is there anything you would like to achieve before the year is out?
PL: "Well, right now I'm feeling pretty pleased as yesterday I received my copies of the album and it's brilliant just to kick back and look and listen to what we created. There was so much hard work involved in pulling this together to the point where we almost broke, but we stuck at it. So for the rest of the year I would just like to achieve healthy sales, as ultimately, that is what will determine (in the eyes of our record labels, at least) whether Eden's Curse has been a success or not. It will be what ultimately decides if we are touring or doing a second record. So, I just hope that people buy the album."
ME: "For starters, I'd just like to receive copies of the master album. I find it very cute that some animals on the internet are whoring it to the masses before I ever lay eyes on it. Fuck.....I'm just the singer!! Maybe next time I'll assume the role of President and then people can salute or I'll send 'em packin'."
"Until this band hits the stage I'm not finished! And even then I'm too dangerous for my own good! Stay back 50 feet! Otherwise you might hurt yourself!"
MM: Thanks again for answering a few of our questions, we wish you all the best with Eden's Curse and for the future. Are there any last words/comments for our readers?
PL: Thanks to each and everyone of you out there who has supported us. Please stop by at our website www.EdensCurse.com and say hello - we read and answer all mail! If you haven't checked out the band yet then again our website or our Myspace (www.myspace.com/edenscurse) has clips that you can listen to. We hope you enjoy what you hear. Keep rocking !!!!!! Thanks Chris."
ME: "Thanks for kicking it with us! Anyone who supports the real world of Rock N' Roll, I salute you guys and girls. Drive safely.....It's dangerous out there! And this time I'm serious!"
