Back to Interview List

MM: Thanks for talking to us:
Sam Carter: Thanks for the interview Chris and Amy

MM: I was quite surprised when you left Battered. Was this spare of the moment or had you been thinking about it for a while?
SC: I suppose I had been thinking about it for a while, its just as much as I loved battered and still do, I have always loved less technical music, and I have also I had a love for groove based and slow based music, and I guess and you can’t ignore the musical urges within you.

MM: Were Matt (Kenway, Bass/Vocals) and Tom (Barker, Drums) in any bands before Cambian Dawn?
SC: Matts been in loads of bands of different types, I actually met him through my girlfriend because they work together, as for Tom he played bass in a stoner band called warlock(they were like kyuss basically) and he also plays bass in a progressive technical death metal band called execration, I met Tom through work because we both work for that bastian of the Uk retailers tesco

MM: You have just finished recording your first demo for your new band, Cambian Dawn. How has this been received so far?
SC: Its been great, I have spent a great deal of time and money sending out cds to all around the world, so if you haven’t got one yet and you left your address I have sent them out, they are also free so if anybody else wants any just leave a message on our guestbook (http://cambiandawn.tk)

MM: To people who don’t know about Cambian Dawn, How does it compare to your work in Battered?
SC: Well Chris its a lot different, in fact those who have the battered demo, know that I wrote central metropolis which I guess was my attempt at putting a stoner (god I hate that term) style song in what was essentially a band that’s across between N.W.O.B.H.M and an 80’s style thrash band with hints of death metal. Were as cambian dawn is basically a doom/stoner band with the emphasis on spacial awareness, and because there’s only the three of us it lets us play with silence a lot more, also there’s no twin guitar stuff which was also part of battered’s sound, not to compare myself to Lee Dorian, but its like when he was in napalm all he wanted to do was play slow.

MM: Were you happy with final result?
SC: Yeah I mean it was recorded on a mates 8-track in his home studio (zak house studio, go zak) in about 2.1/2 hours, so it was pretty quick, it’s a little rusty, but it gives us a slightly garage almost punk rock sound like all the good old doom bands like st.vitus, we also had the shell for another song recorded which was slow as fuck (what is what we wanted to call the demo) but the hard disk kept fucking up, technology huh?

MM: Do you still stay in touch with Bob (Dixon, Battered)
SC: Indeed me and Mr. Dixon met up in the pub for a pre xmas drink, were he got to hear our demo for the first time on my cd walkman and he loved it, I really hope that he and Rik keep battered going, as it’s a great heavy”fuckin”metal band playing good old fashioned British metal which most bands don’t play now so anyone who wants to join go to battered site (http://battered-uk.com)

MM: What are your plans now?
SC: Well to try and do as many gigs as possible we have a few things lined up but we will be printing some t-shirts and trying to do a single at some stage, also to keep practicing and write some new songs (which we have loads of one of the ones I have written comes in at nearly 10mins!!)

MM: How have the reactions been to live gigs?
SC: Well we have only done the 1 so far but that was excellent it had to be rescheduled due to some silly cow wanting to have a party in the venue that night, so when we actually did the gig we had no support bands so we played some covers and was on for nearly an hour, we got our mate (kyuss) Chris Elis up with us to do a kyuss cover (thumb) and at the end the crowd wanted more so we busked a version of green machine too, so in spite of the adversity we pulled of a great gig, and quite frankly I cannot wait for the next one.

MM: What do you think about Webzines?
SC: They are the life blood of the scene, at least as far as the online community go, I look at webzines of all different styles and none of them are as good as the metal ones, I also think they are great for sorting out contacts as well, plus they are fun to look at too, although there’s one webzine who shall remain nameless who appear to slag off everything I have ever put my name to, maybe I should do a black metal and go under an assumed name, how about lord twatrash!!!

MM: You are also featured on the Metal Mayhem Vol.I CD, lets hope this gets you noticed and spreads the word about Cambian Dawn
! SC: God I hope so Chris hopefully we can get through to the right sort of people and get them to come out and support us, this music will not be everybody’s cup of tea but those who hear it love it.

MM: Any final words?
SC: Yeah firstly, thanks to Chris and Amy at metal-mayhem, we will be going on tour in some parts of the UK and playing at a doom festival in Belgium in April, so check our site for details, please help to keep live music alive (support your scene, and not just BIG bands don’t forget your local pub has bands too). As my dear friend Kostas from Belgian funeral doom band pantheist would say “2003 will be the year of old school doom and funeral doom” thanks to everybody who has helped us (and who will help us in the future) the UK has a hotbed of doom/stoner bands so check them out, my beloved crystal palace fc will get promoted this year, lastly check out these site: www.doom-metal.com
